Artist Statement:
Dream Room invites participants to re-experience their childhood memories of freely drawing on the blank pages of a notebook. By using the stationery provided and stepping in front of a green screen, participants are encouraged to collectively construct, customize, and “play” inside the room. Participants may then step in front of the green screen and inhabit the diorama, sharing in the collective memories and creations of everyone who entered the room and interacted with the space.
Inspired by my childhood dream to "bring my drawings to life" that authors such as Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants), Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate), and Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), the concept of nostalgia and collaborative play were the core themes in driving the creation of this work.
Combining my love for creating miniature dioramas, paper-craft art, and a comic/manga art style, a miniature diorama was constructed out of steel and covered in paper to create the facade of a collective notebook that everyone can add to and customize. Pre-made props were also constructed with magnets embedded in them so participants could stick items to the steel walls of the diorama.
